Why Do People Envy Us?

Black and white photograph of two women walking apart on an empty road, symbolizing distance, comparison, and emotional tension

Why do people sometimes envy us? What makes others react toward us with direct or indirect hostility even when we never tried to provoke such a reaction?

It does not necessarily mean that they have more than us, nor that they have less. It does not mean that we caused it. It does not mean that we deserve harsh behavior or words spoken behind our backs. And it also does not mean that there is always a way for us to fix it, because in many cases it does not begin from us at all.

Perhaps it simply means that something we carry within ourselves creates a feeling of peace, calmness, or confidence without needing to constantly show it to the world. And this can give the impression of stability and inner strength, as if life is not deeply shaking us apart.

And sometimes, this creates insecurity in people who are missing those same feelings within themselves.

So what do we do to avoid it?

Maybe nothing. Because not everything is within our control. What is within our control is to continue living with love the very things that unfortunately make others envy us. And perhaps, in the end, this may quietly help or inspire them to discover their own unique path as well.

  1. Have you ever felt that someone disliked you simply because you seemed at peace with yourself?

  2. To your first comment, yes, there have been occasions, directed at myself and at others. Thank you for a very thought provoking post. Over the years (I am almost 76 now) I have seen 99 percent of different attitudes, mostly fine ones from very dear people I might add.

    1. Thank you for your thoughtful comment Denise. You're absolutely right sometimes it is the people closest to us who surprise us the most. I'm sure that over the years you've observed so many different behaviours, and that experience has given you the flexibility to handle situations with greater understanding. I'm still learning and trying to do the same, one step at a time.
