The Houses That Stay Awake At Night

Quiet street at night with glowing apartment windows and warm lights in the darkness

Last night at 2 in the morning, I was looking at the starry sky and the moon through the window. Below, other lights were glowing too… the lights from the apartment building across the street. From people staying awake for every possible reason.

I tried to imagine how many homes tonight hold people losing sleep over all kinds of worries. Those moments when the house no longer feels large enough for you, when the walls begin to close in around you...

What I truly wish is that tonight, the only lights left shining will be those of the sky, and that the lamps inside homes will slowly turn off. That the coolness of the night may gently embrace every pain and every anxious thought.

I looked out the window once again, and one light went out.

  1. I sometimes wonder how many people are awake right now, staring at the ceiling, hoping tomorrow feels lighter.
